Habitat volunteer Bob "Dawg" Clum helps a Henderson County High School student set the second truss to go up on the new house under construction at 804 Meadow Street. Students in the Construction Technologies classes have performed much of the construction work on this 49th Habitat house, aided by members of Habitat's Thursday Crew and homeowner candidates. Bob Clum is both a member of the Thursday Crew and a volunteer teacher's aide for the class. He is a University of Georgia alum and avid fan, thus the nickname!

Habitat's Thursday Crew Raises First Wall

CSX Railroad Employees Volunteer to Install Floor

Locomotive engineers, conductors and other employees from the CSX Railroad stationed out of the Evansville yards volunteered Wednesday, September 22, and laid the floor deck at 804 Meadow Street. On a near-record breaking 97 degree last day of summer, these volunteers worked inspite of the heat to further along the construction on Habitat's 49th house in Henderson. Thanks for all the hard work!

Habitat's Build-Sites Are For Learning Too!

Instructor Brad Moyes uses Habitat's building site as a "hands-on" classroom for construction skills to Junior and Senior students from Henderson County High School. The high school's Construction Technologies classes are involved in helping to build Habitat's 49th house in Henderson as they have been with several Habitat houses in the past several years. Students learn valuable carpentry skills and techniques as they help lay out the house and work from the foundation to the roof ridge, inside and out.

Generally, Habitat volunteers can learn a lot of different skills from those who manage and supervise the construction site during a house-build. More than a few times a volunteer has said at the end of a work session, "Now I can go home and do this at my own house!" Habitat volunteers do not have to be skilled to work at a job site, just willing--willing to do whatever needs to be done, willing to take instruction, willing to help someone else.

In addition to the high school classes working at the Meadow Street site, Habitat's Thursday Crew is there most Thursday mornings and a Saturday Crew meets there most every Saturday morning. Volunteers are welcome. To confirm a work session or to inquire of what will be the task of the day, simply call 869-9011. Come join the effort and perhaps learn something new!

Habitat's Thursday Crew Builds Ramp

Some of the members of Henderson Habitat's Thursday Crew stand on a wheelchair ramp they recently built and installed at a Hebbardsville residence so that a quadriplegic homeowner can easily and safely inter and exit his home. Materials for the ramp were paid for by a grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati through its member, the Ohio Valley Financial Group. These retired volunteers meet weekly for breakfast and then a morning's work helping build Habitat's houses and accomplish other good deeds for people in need. Old National BanCorp Grant Helps Fund House Build

Tony Krampe and staff representing the Old National Bank Foundation present a check for $8,000 to Habitat Board President R. Paul Bird, Jr., helping to fund the building of Habitat's 49th house in Henderson. The house is also being subsidized by a grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati through its member bank, the Ohio Valley Financial Group. Both grants will help to pay much of the $65K estimated costs of construction. This particular Habitat house is also funded by the early mortgage pay-off of the fourth Habitat house to be built in Henderson, the home of Mrs. Annie Sallier constructed in the early 1990s.

Foundation Work Starts Construction of #49

Employees of Jeff O'Risky's Escavating Company, Evansville, assemble the forms for the poured concrete foundation walls for Habitat's 49th house. Mr. O'Risky has donated the labor and materials for the footings and stem-wall foundation which will have a finish as if it were a brick masonry wall. The ten inch wide walls will provide a sure and sturdy foundation for the new house.

More than 400 participants ran and walked in Saturday's Tri-Fest 5K Run sponsored by Henderson's Breakfast Lions Club to benefit Habitat--almost twice as many as in any previous year. Mike Duncan crossed the finish line in front of all participants. The first female to cross the finish line was Angela Schwartz.

Jim Davis of The Independence Bank presents a check for $25,000 to Henderson's Habitat for Humanity for the building of House #48. Affiliate Board President Paul Bird receives the contribution as Bob Hicks looks on. The Independence Bank also has committed employees who will volunteer to help build the house.

Joining The Independence Bank with underwriting this project are Big Rivers Electrical Corporation, Rio Tinto Al Can-Sebree, Kenergy Electrical CoOp, and Hazex Construction Company.

Construction of this house is intended to start immediately after Easter, as soon as weather permits and the ground dries some. The house will be built at 837 Clay Street for the Joe and Carol Martinez family.

The Atlanta-based organization celebrates in 2010 the "everyday heroes who serve in their communities with the 'Give A Day-Get A Disney Day' program.

Home Paint Center Donates Inventory To ReStore

Mr. and Mrs. Richard Melton closed the South Green Street doors to Home Paint Center on December 31st and ended a near thirty-year family-owned business in Henderson. Much of the remaining MAB brand paint, paint supplies, wallpaper, boarders and other inventory was very graciously donated to Habitat's ReStore. All kinds of paint, solvents, brushes, rollers, ladders and other paint tools are now on sale at wholesale prices. So, also, are rolls of wall paper and boarder. Proceeds from the sales of this inventory are applied to the construction of the next Habitat home to be built, starting in April, at 837 Clay Street.

The Independence Bank formally notified Habitat for Humanity of Henderson, KY of its providing $25,000 and the volunteer work force from among its employees to help build the first Habitat house in Henderson in 2010. To be built at 837 Clay Street, construction will begin in March or April depending upon weather and ground conditions, in partnership with the Joe and Carol Martinez family. The 1300+ square foot house will have four bedrooms, a bath and a half, be all electric and meet many Energy Star efficiency requirements. Mr. Jim Davis will coordinate the Bank's work force.

Habitat for Humanity of Henderson bids farewell to Terry Emrick (top photo), President of the Board of Directors since July and welcomes Paul Bird, Jr. (bottom Photo) as its new President entering 2010. Both local businessmen have served on Habitat's Board for a number of years and been very involved with the organization's activities. Terry leaves Henderson as the President of The Bank of Henderson to take a similar position with a bank in Cynthiana, KY. He was chair of the Search Committee for Habitat's executive director in early 2008, has served on a number of administrative committees and was involved most recently in the Pickin' & Pedalin' Bike Tours last summer and as a construction volunteer on The Apostle's Build project at 511 Plum Street. Paul is with The Henderson Insurance firm. He has been active with Habitat's Family Services and Resource Development committees, was involved in securing the new ReStore location and developing Habitat's endowment and foundation.

Henderson Habitat's Board of Directors is an active group of eighteen volunteers from across the county involved in real estate, banking, construction, law, industry, insurance, church, agri-business and private commerce. The Board meets monthly to review the affiliate's operations, finances and future endeavors. Members are generally elected in June to a three-year term of office after serving on an administrative committee or in a special event.

The Apostles' Build Is Dedicated

Henderson Habitat's 47th house at 511 Plum Street was dedicated Sunday, November 22nd, by a large crowd of volunteers and supporters of the community's first Apostles' Build project. Representatives of eight local churches, Henderson's two Lions Clubs and Habitat's Thursday Crew laid hands on the new home of Eric and Casandra Bridges and prayed for God's continuing blessings upon the couple. Thursday Crew leader and Habitat Board member Fred Lauver presents the keys to Eric and Casandra, followed by Rev. Dr. Dave Leslie, President of the Henderson Ministerial Association, who presents them the Family Bible. ReStore Manager Donna Phillips offers a framed, cross-stitched Wildcat, held by Henry Sawyer, the Breakfast Lions Club team leader, to Eric, a dedicated UK fan.

Ground Broken On Habitat's 48th Habitat House

Members and friends of the Joe and Carol Martinez family joyfully and gratefully participated in a ground breaking ceremoney at 837 Clay Street recently. Construction on what will be Habitat's 48th house in Henderson will begin as soon as sufficient funds have been developed. Joe, Carol, daughter Carmella and sons Joey and Malichi have all contributed a total of more than 120 hours of sweat equity in building the new house for Eric and Casandra Bridges. Foundation work on the Martinez house hopefully will begin before Christmas. "It's a matter of having enough funds to pay for the materials," explained Bob Hicks, Habitat's Executive Director, "and in this present economy, donations have been slow to come in." Still, on faith, Habitat's mission will continue!

Soon to be Henderson Habitat's 47th homeowner/partner, Eric Bridges (top photo) puts in some sweat equity helping to paint what will be his and his wife, Casandra's, new home at 511 Plum Street. Carol Martinez (middle photo) helps Eric and Casandra with the painting. She and her family have contributed more than 120 hours of sweat equity on the Bridges house and are eager to start on the next Habitat house in Henderson which will be their own!

In the bottom photo, "Thursday Crew" member Bob "Dawg" Clum, an avid Georgia Bull Dog fan, struggles to get the UK blue on the walls in Eric's treatment room. He promised Eric, a fanatic Wildcat fan, that somewhere in the house a dawg print would be left as evidence of his help on the house.

Built and financed by eight local churches and Henderson's two Lions Clubs, the Apostle's Build house is progressing towards a pre-Thanksgiving completion and occupancy. Hope Eric finds that dawg's claw by then!

The Legacy of a Passion

Ken Middleton's passion was Habitat for Humanity: helping empower families to become homeowners of safe, decent shelter they could afford to call their own when they had no other opportunity because their income was at the lower end of the scale. One of the most endearing photos of Ken was taken in September, 2008, at the Ground Breaking ceremoney for the Habitat house now completed and occupied by the Shulisa Barrett family at 608 Letcher Street. Ken helped young O'Marion Barrett turn a shovel of dirt on the house that now provides him his own bedroom and a safe, warm home in which to grow up.

The former member of Henderson Habitat's Board of Directors and member of the "Thursday Crew" was remembered and honored Wednesday afternoon with the Board's naming of the Henderson Foundation benefitting Habitat in his memory.

During a reception held in Habitat's newly renovated offices at 325 South Green Street Wednesday afternoon, October 21st, Terry Emrick, President of the Board of Directors and Doug Bell, Campaign Committee Chairman, announced The Kenneth Middleton Foundation Benefitting Habitat for Humanity of Henderson, KY, to more than fifty guests. Interest income earned annually from the endowment fund will help build one more house in addition to those built by the Affiliate and funded by other means. Ken Middleton was a dedicated Habitat volunteer who served on local and state Habitat Boards of Directors. He was instrumental in initiating and managing Henderson Habitat's Aluminum Can Recycling project and opening and later relocating Habitat's ReStore. He helped start and was an active member of Henderson's "Thursday Crew" who form the core of the local Habitat construction program. Ken also helped initiate and fund the Affiliate's Foundation and endowment which was named in his memory by the Board of Directors at the reception.

Pickin' & Pewdalin' Made Successful By Lots of Volunteers

A whole host of people in blue shirts aided participants in Saturday's Pickin' & Pedalin' bicycle tours. Most of Habitat's Board of Directors, members of the Resource Development and PnP committees, members of Pleasant Valley Christian and Henderson General Baptist churches and a crew from Kenergy Electric Co-Op volunteered their Saturday morning to make the event so successful.

Pleasant Valley Christian Church Goes All Out For Cyclists

With home-baked cookies and trail mix, plenty of shade trees and genuine down-home, country friendliness, the folks of the Pleasant Valley Christian Church, between Robards and Niagra, made the 62 mile trek through Henderson County worthwhile. More than two hundred cyclists stopped to rest at the church on their way to Hebbardsville and back to Henderson during the Pickin' & Pedalin bike tours for Habitat.

340 RIDE BICYCLES FOR HABITAT

Three hundred forty cyclists rode routes of 12, 22, 38 and 62 miles through eastern Henderson County Saturday, August 8, to the benefit of Habitat for Humanity's house-building ministry. They braved the 92+ degree-90% humidity weather to enjoy the rolling hills through acres of tall corn and soybeans, small villages and the friendly volunteers pickin' Bluegrass music and handing out water, Gatorade, trail mix, fruit and cookies at rest stops.

The Apostles' Build Continues Each Saturday

Until the rains stopped their efforts, volunteers from St. Paul's Episcopal, Airline and Finley Baptist churches and from the Henderson Noon Lions Club worked these past two Saturdays decking the roof and applying house wrap to the Apostles' Build at 511 Plum Street. Members of Henderson's Noon Lions Club joined members of First Christian Church and two approved Habitat applicant households Saturday, June 27, to raise the roof trusses on the Apostles' Build House at 511 Plum Street. Persevering 95+ degrees and humidity as high, these dedicated volunteers got the job done by 11am! Watching from the far right are the house recipients, Eric and Casandra Bridges. Joe and Carol Martinez and their two teen-age children are on the other side of the house helping to nail the side decking to the exterior wall.

Following a Saturday off to celebrate July 4th, work will resume preparing the house to receive its roof.

Habitat's Board of Directors Welcome Four More

L-R: Justin Jones, Natalie Hankins and Todd Blackburn will join Roger Campbell as new members of Henderson Habitat's Board of Directors starting July 1st. While Roger is a long-term volunteer with Habitat since its beginning in this community returning to the Board for another term, Justin, Natalie and Todd began a year or so ago working with the affiliate's Resource Development Committee, helping to organize this spring's Tri-Fest 5K Run and this August's Pickin & Pedalin Bike Tours in association with the Bluegrass in The Park festival. Justin has also worked with Habitat's Construction Committee and developed the plans currently being built as the Apostle's Build House.

Members from the Presbyterian Church, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Community Baptist and First Christian Churches have begun the long awaited "Apostles' Build" at 511 Plum Street. Eight congregations and three Lions Club organizations have joined resources and volunteers to build Henderson Habitat's first Energy Star compliant "green-built" house in partnership with Eric and Casandra Bridges. Saturday morning work crews in three weeks have laid the floor sytem and raised all the walls to the two bedroom 900 square foot house.

100+ join in 47th Ground Breaking Celebration

More than 100 people surrounded Eric and Casandra Bridges Sunday afternoon, April 26, during the ground breaking for their new home, Habitat's 47th in Henderson. Members from six of the seven churches and two Henderson Lions Clubs committed to this special projected designated "The Apostles' Build" turned over shovels of dirt at the build site to celebrate the start of construction.

In addition to the Breakfast and Noon Lions Clubs and the Lions Club International Foundation, the house will be financed and built by volunteers from First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Trinity Lutheran Church, Community Baptist Church, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Airline Baptist Church, Finley Baptist Church and Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church. Members from The Presbyterian Church and members and staff of the 09 Henderson County Football Team will also participate in the construction efforts.

Bluegrass Festival's Pickin' & Pedalin' Bike Tour: August 8th

Steve Hargis stands between last year's 100th and 101st cyclists who stopped and rested at the Hebbardsville Volunteer Fire Department along the 62 Mile Route in the annual Bluegrass Festival Pickin & Pedalin' Bike Tour. Many teams also entered the tour from all around the tri-state area. The event features a 12 mile route, 38 mile route and the 62 mile route through much of south-eastern Henderson County.

John Mathias rolled across the finish line ahead of more than half the runners in Saturday's Tri-Fest 5K Run/Walk event benefitting Henderson Habitat. 219 Run/Walk 5K for Habitat

Mike Duncan with a time of 17:54.8 and Angela Morgan with a time of 20:35.4 were the overall male and female leaders of the 18th Annual Tri-Fest 5K Run/Walk Saturday, April 18, to benefit Habitat's continuing work in Henderson.

A beautiful Saturday morning in the high 50s, low 60s, made for a great race event organized by Marty Littrel, Nancy Hankins, Laura Taylor Scott, Todd Blackburn, Bill Polk, Jr., Justin Jones, Paul Bird, Jr. and Steve Hargis. The 9am race started with the trumpeter's "Call to the Mark" by Tracey Payne, the commands called out by Darrell Lovell, the event's MC, and the shot fired by Habitat's Executive Director. Forty-five minutes or so later, 219 participants had crossed the finish line to a welcoming crowd of several hundred persons cheering their loved ones and friends on!

Thanks to Sarah Heath, event registrar and all who assisted her, to the Rotaracts, Habitat Board members, Thursday Crew, and other volunteers who helped with the race. A special thanks to the Greater Evansville Runners and Walkers Club timers for their technical assistance and to the Henderson Breakfast Lions Club.

Work resumes at 608 Letcher Street

Eleven year old Taylor Clum, grand-daughter of Thursday Crew member Bob "Dawg" Clum, spends some of her snow day off from school volunteering with Henderson Habitat and granddad. Taylor, a student in Mrs. Johnson's sixth grade class at South Middle School often comes with her grandfather to help him with whatever he's doing.

Henderson Habitat for Humanity's youth volunteer policy allows for young people ages 14 to 18 to be on the construction site during construction when accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian. Exceptions for younger children are made during non-hazardous construction times such as the final clean-up Taylor is involved in and landscaping.

A very welcomed and relaxful respite from their diligent labors at 32 N. Julia Street, the AmeriCorps NCCC Fire 3 Team were the guests of Anthony and Ruth Hazelwood for a cookout and yard games recently. Invited to share in the good food and fun were also members of Habitat's staff and their spouses Steve and Debbie Hargis, Bob and Sally Hicks, Sarah Heath and Donna Phillips. Ken and Susie Middleton assisted the Hazelwood's with the hamburgers, hotdogs, all the trimmin's, brownies and chocolate-chip cookies!

The nine AmeriCorp young adults finished their second full week in Henderson, having raised the walls, set the roof trusses and started decking the roof on the Habitat for Humanity house underway in partnership with Laura Green and her family. They are committed to staying through the end of October and hope to have much of the work on the house completed by the time they leave.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 6, 2009, 6:30-8:00pm,

at the Henderson Housing Authority on South Adams Street.

Typically, applications for Habitat for Humanity housing are handed out from Habitat's office at 459 Klutey Park Plaza each year from January through March and then reviewed by the Family Services Committee for recommendation to Habitat's Board of Directors. In 2009, a new application and effort to improve the acquisition of information needed to consider a household for the partnership that builds a safe, decent house affordable to people in need will be initiated on Tuesday evening, January 6th. The Housing Authoriuty is providing the meeting room ONLY and is not otherwise involved in Habitat's application process. It is hoped that a number of households will be represented at this special meeting that explains in detail every aspect of the application and partnership Habitat establishes with an approved applicant household. This meeting is for adults only. Children should not be brought to the meeting. NO childcare will be provided.

Applicants must be US citizens and residents of or employed in Henderson County for at least one year prior to the date of their application. Applicants must live in substandard, unsafe and/or overcrowded circumstances and not be elgible for coventional mortgage financing. Applicants must be willing and able to participate in the building or rehabilitation of someone else's Habitat house and then participate in the construction/rehab of their own house. They must be willing and able to pay a $600 down payment prior to occupancy of their Habitat house and a monthly principal-only mortgage payment of approximately $350 including taxes and insurance.

When completed, the Habitat house is sold to the approved applicant for the costs of the lot acquisition, building materials and title transfer. Much of the labor is volunteered and Habitat adds no profit. Habitat will finance the sales price of the house for 20-25 years without adding interest. A homeowner's interest-free mortgage payment is "recycled" by Habitat to help build another family's house.

Applicants are required to give consent to credit and criminal checks and provide verifications of household income, employment and rent as well as personal character references.

Henderson Habitat for Humanity intends to comply to the letter and spirit of federal anti-discrimination laws regarding age, gender, national origin, race and marital status.

Henderson Habitat welcomes the nine-member AmeriCorps NCCC "Fire 3" team to north-western Kentucky and to North Julia Street, where they will be busy weekdays assembling a pre-framed "kit" house Habitat is building in partnership with Laura Green and family. The young adults will be here until the first of November and hope to have the house nearly finished by then.

The young adults--all of them are in their twenties--range from Honolulu, Hawaii to Blakely, Georgia, from Maryland, Connecticut, Ohio and Virginia. Most are college graduates with degrees in mass communications, psychology, sociology, outdoor education and biology. Some came to Henderson after community service along the Gulf Coast with post-Katrina rebuilding and others from clean up after the mid-west floods in Iowa. All will have given at least a year of volunteer service to help various communities in significant ways.

Habitat's Resource Development Director, Steve Hargis, coordinated this fifth AmeriCorps team to visit Henderson over the past several years. He arranged accommodations for the team at Bennett Memorial United Methodist Church and the YMCA. Habitat's Construction Manager, Tommy Zvara, provides supervision and direction of the team at the job site.

Offers of meals and meetings with the team are being coordinated by Habitat and are encouraged for developing community relations. HC Detention Center Helps Unpack Kit House

Thanks to the community service work detail from the Henderson County Detention Center, pre-framed wall sections stored for over a year were recently unpacked and delivered to the job site on N. Julia Street. The four bedroom "kit house," as it has come to be known, was a gift to Henderson Habitat from a Christian mission group in eastern Kentucky. Under the supervision of Captain Ray Fine and Officer Jerry Lee, and with the use of a flat-bed trailer and truck provided by Billy Ray of B&B Excavating Contractor, these men made short work of a monumental task enabling another house--Habitat's 45th--to get underway.

High School Student's House Shaping Up!

Students in Brad Moyes' Construction Technology Class at Henderson County High School raise the roof trusses on their Habitat for Humanity house underway at 716 Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave. The new home of the Connie Madole family progresses each day by two groups of students whose class instruction comes on the job! Not only learning a practical skill and potential trade, the students also receive safety training and benefit from developing skills of teamwork, leadership and self-esteem from quality workmanship. In the white hard hat, Mr. Moyes helps students achieve goals they once thought were beyond their reach.

Deck Boards Given To Habitat's ReStore

Henderson Habitat's ReStore Manager Donna Phillips stands with Anthony Hazelwood and Bill Jones of Hazex Construction Company where the first of 18,432 linear feet of Mocha colored composite deck boards were unloaded. The 5/4" X 12 and 16 foot length boards will be sold at a discounted price through the ReStore and proceeds applied to the building of another Habitat house in Henderson for a family in need of safe, decent shelter they can afford to call their own. Customers will have to pick up their purchases at Hazex after paying for them at the ReStore on Klutey Park Plaza, across from the YMCA. The ReStore is open to customers 9am-4pm Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and 9am-12noon on Saturdays.

A 17 YEAR LEGACY CONTINUES

Ms. Edith Suggs stands proudly on the porch of Henderson's FIRST Habitat for Humanity house. Seventeen years ago--August 26, 1991--Habitat celebrated its first Ground Breaking at 633 Seventh Street. Then Henderson Mayor Bill Newman and Judge Paul Herron attended the festivities. Ms. Suggs, now retired from the KY Dept. of Social Services, worked regularly with thirty volunteers to build her house. It was finished four and a half months later, in early January, 1992.

Ms. Suggs and Henderson Habitat's pioneer volunteers established a continuing legacy of the construction of safe, decent shelter affordable to households living at the lower end of the economic scale that presently has forty-three Henderson partner families and is building for three more.

Congratulations to Ms. Suggs and thanks for her faithful participation with Habitat. Her monthly principal-only mortgage payment has been helping to build all those other Habitat houses in Henderson since!

Habitat's Elimination Side!

Habitat's MISSION is multi-facited to be sure, building hope building houses for families in need of safe, decent and affordable shelter. But often before the CONstruction of a new house can begin, the DEstruction of an unsafe, substandard one must take place. Workers with B & B Excavating Company recently accomplished that task for Habitat at 608 Letcher Street,
ELIMINATING a substandard house so that a new one can be built in its place. Habitat is grateful for the voluntary contribution of the building lot on Letcher Street from David and Dana O'Nan. Their generosity makes Habitat's work possible.

Work on the Shulisa Barrett family's new home of will begin within a few days--the 46th Henderson County family to receive a Habitat for Humanity house since 1990. Habitat's dedicated volunteer "Thursday Crew," led by Fred Lauver, will be engaged in building this house, the third new house to be started within the past few weeks.

HCHS RAISE FIRST WALL ON MLK

Junior and Senior students in Brad Moyes Construction Technology Class at Henderson County High School raise the first wall on the house they are building at 716 Martin Luther King Ave in partnership with Habitat, 1:00pm, Thursday, August 14th. The students earn graduation credit hours while learning a valuable trade and about teamwork, responsibility and quality workmanship.

339 CYCLISTS PLUS VOLUNTEERS = SUCCESSFUL BENEFIT

Steve Hargis stands between the 100th and 101st riders Saturday stopping at the Hebbards- ville Volunteer Fire Department for refreshment and rest. Teri Ames and Linda Wulf of Newburg, IN were among the 339 participants in the Blue Grass Festival's Pickin' & Pedalin' Bike Tour. More than $4,500 were raised by the event thanks to the efforts of cyclists and the volunteers who were stationed at rest stops all along the 62 mile track.

Habitat expresses its gratitude also to Sureway Food Stores for the donation of fresh bananas and oranges provided at the rest stops to the cyclists.

Young ones and younger ones, ladies and gents, father and daughter they pedaled for Habitat and picked and sang to the enjoyment of all.

ReStore Manager Donna Philips and volunteer Annie Sallier welcome customers with smiles and lots of friendly help. The ReStore is open Wednesdays 9am-4pm and Saturdays 9am-12noon. Annie is one of a growing number of volunteers at the ReStore who help receive, price and display merchandise and assist customers. The ReStore schedules the pick ups of contributions on Tuesdays but is not open for sales and is closed on Mondays. Habitat's ReStore's New Look Looks Good!

Customers find home furnishings, electrical and plumbing fixtures, furniture, housewares and fix-up supplies more easily now as a major rehab effort concludes at Habitat's ReStore, 459 Klutey Park Plaza. Isles are wider, items for sale are located together--it's just easier to shop and find terrific buys!

Members of Habitat's Thursday Crew work to install a storefront double door which will enhance the entrance to the ReStore and facilitate better customer service with removalk of purchases. Significant changes inside the store during the past two weeks include increasing the sales floor, building a new sales checkout counter and reorganizing merchandise presentations. The new look includes dedicated areas for furniture, antiques and collectables, books, housewares, doors, windows, cabinets, electrical fixtures and plumbing fixtures. Everything in the ReStore is donated and available to the public for sale at a discount. Proceeds from ReStore sales enable Habitat for Humanity to build more basic and affordable houses for families living in substandard circumstances at the lower end of the economic scale.

AmeriCorps Team Builds Henderson's 45th Habitat House

Lindsey Hodges leads a team of seven female and three male AmeriCorp National Civilian Community Corps volunteers building Henderson's 45th Habitat house, starting September 8th. Assembling from flood relief work in Iowa and Katrina rebuilding in Gulfport, MS, these young adults will spend eight weeks here working with Habitat for Humanity and house recipient Laura Green on her new home at 32 North Julia Street. The team's goal is to complete the four bedroom house construction during their stay under the director of Tommy Zvara, Habitat's Construction Manager.

Ms. Hodge's team is the fifth AmeriCorps NCCC team hosted by Henderson Habitat over the past several years. These teams have previously built two Habitat houses in Corydon and one each on Clay and Washington Streets. They look forward to enjoying some of the same Southern Hospitality previous NCCC teams have reported receiving during their stays in Henderson, thanks primarily to the efforts of Steve Hargis, Habitat's Resource Development Director. In partnership with Habitat, Bennett Memorial United Methodist Church will provide sleeping and eating accomodations and the YMCA will provide shower and recreational opportunities.

The AmeriCorps NCCC teams all across America have as their goal--"strengthening communities and developing leaders through team-based national and community service." Henderson Habitat's staff and Board of Directors are excited about this Team's arrival and the work they will accomplish to benefit both a family in need and the community.

Habitat's Thursday Crew members and staff --all point to Fred Lauvre (in center) wearing new t-shirts proclaiming their desire: "I want to be like Fred!" Fred calls the gang together each Thursday for breakfast and a morning of volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity. The "T-Crew" has built several houses in the last few years and prepares to start another project soon. There's seldom a dull Thursday morning while working with the T-Crew--lots of fun, fellowship and good work each week. Henderson's 44th Habitat House Underway!

Connie Madole has been waiting for quite some time, but finally, work on the Habitat house for her and her daughter Erica and son Marc has started at 716 Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue in Henderson. Joining the partnership between the Madoles and Habitat for Humanity will be the Construction Technology Class of Henderson County High School taught by Brad Moyes. Learning a trade with on the job training, these students will frame, roof, apply vinyl siding, insulate, paint and trim out the three bedroom house in the next several weeks.

The Madoles will join in the effort, performing a minimum of 300 volunteer hours or "sweat equity" in the construction of theirs and someone else's Habitat house. When completed, Habitat will sell the new house for the costs of land acquisition, building materials and title transfer. No profit margin is added. Habitat will finance the mortgage for twenty-five years at zero interest. These no-profit added, no interest charge and sweat equity requirement characteristics of Habitat for Humanity's housing ministry have defined the more than 300,000 world-wide Habitat house partnerships developed since 1976. Each month's homeowner principal-only mortgage payment is "recycled" by Habitat to help build or rehab a house for another family living in substandard, unsafe or overcrowded circumstances whose income is at the lower end of th economic scale.

Building new or rehabilitating houses in partnership with families who cannot otherwise acquire conventional mortgage financing is the focus of Habitat's mission. Improving neighborhoods and bettering the housing stock of entire communities are also key goals of Habitat's efforts as it works in partnerships with individuals, churches, businesses and civic groups to raise a community's awareness of the need to eliminate and replace substandard shelter and provide safe, decent, affordable housing. Habitat's work force is primarily volunteer. Its construction efforts are dictated by voluntary contributions of money, time and people's willingness to help their neighbors. In fact, "willingness" is the only requirement of any Habitat volunteer: willingness to share one's resources, willingness to sweat a little (or in August, a lot!) and willingness to show up to do whatever needs to get done. Habitat staff members gladly welcome anyone, young or old, male or female, skilled or unskilled who's willing to learn and willing to help.
